Mapping your lawn is an important step to ensure precise automated mowing without leaving bits and pieces of your lawn.

Navimow offers both Auto and Manual Mowing options. Users can use any of them, depending on their lawn conditions.

Let’s understand how you can use both these options and map your lawn in the Navimow app.

Preparations Before Mapping

Before you get started, here are a few things you must consider for better results.

Lawn Cleaning: You need to have a clean lawn, free from debris, stones, twigs, broken branches, and other things. It’s necessary because the mower might consider things like stones/toys as obstacles in the lawn.

Mower Charging: Charge the mower before mapping. It’s better if it is 100% charged, but the battery should be charged at least more than 25%.

Grass Height: The recommended grass height for mapping is less than or equal to 3.6 inches. If the grass is higher than that, it’s better to mow it first for accurate mapping.

How to Map Lawn with Auto Mapping

Navimow offers the auto-mapping feature. You will find it in the latest robot mowers, such as the Navimow i2 AWD, Navimow H2, and Navimow X4.

With this feature, you don’t need to do anything. The mower automatically maps your whole lawn. However, for this method to work well, the lawn must have defined and flat edges.

If your lawn has visible and closed boundaries, flat edges (no sharp slopes), and is well-defined, you can go with Auto Mapping. The mower will precisely cover every part of the lawn. It uses advanced navigation technologies, such as NRTK, LiDAR, and vision. However, if the lawn is unclear and has uneven edges, auto-mapping will leave several areas and pieces. In this case, manual mowing is a better option.

Let’s see how you can do Auto Mapping.

Step 1: On the Home page, tap Create Map and select Auto Mowing.

Step 2: Follow the on-screen instructions in the app and mark all the mowing zones in the lawn area.

Step 3: Once the zones have been marked, the mower will start mapping. It will identify the outer boundary automatically. Keep in mind that it will travel approximately 10–20 inches inside the boundary line. However, it will cut right along the boundary edge while mowing.

Step 4: You can see the progress in the app. The map will expand in real-time as the mower moves. Once the mapping is complete, the mower will automatically return to its charging station.

How to Map Lawn with Manual Mapping

Manual Mapping is extremely precise, and it allows lawn owners to map the whole area with perfection and as they like.

It’s recommended for lawns that have unclear or uneven lawn edges. Users can avoid cliffs and steep slopes. It also works great if the lawn doesn’t have any visible or closed boundary.

Manual Mapping is also user-friendly and convenient. Despite being manual, users can quickly map their lawns. It’s just like moving an RC car around the boundaries. It’s neither difficult nor too time-consuming.

Here’s how you can do manual mapping with the Navimow app.

Step 1: On the Navimow app, tap “Create a Map.”

Step 2: You will see the Calibrate button. Hit it, and the mower will automatically come out of its charging station and move a bit. It will calibrate on its own. Tap “Start mapping.”

Step 3: To start mapping, you need to take the mower to the starting point. You will see forward, reverse, left, and right buttons on the app. Use them to move the mower to the position from where you want to start mapping. Once you reach there, tap “Reached starting point.”

Step 4: You are ready to map the lawn. Move the mower along the edges and map the whole area. Try to be close to the edge as much as possible.

Step 5: If you made any mistakes while mapping the area, you can use the Eraser button on the screen. Push the button and hold it. It will push the mower back and erase the line. Leave the button when you have erased enough. Now, you can map that portion again.

Step 6: Once you reach the starting point, you will see the “Done” button on the app. Tap it, and you will have a closed mapped area. You can still edit the map if you want.

Completed mapping

Step 7: You have mapped one zone of the lawn. If that’s it, you can save the map. However, if you want to map more zones, tap Add More. Tap Boundary and then repeat the mapping process. Reach the starting point of the new zone and map the area. After mapping all zones, save the map.

Adding more to the map

You can map multiple mowing zones through the Navimow app. There is a specific number of zones that your Navimow model can handle. For instance, with the i2 AWD series, you can mow up to 20 zones, and if you have the X4 series, you can mow up to 120 zones, including no-go areas.

How to Map Off-Limit Islands in the Navimow App?

If there are specific areas in the map that you don’t want to mow, such as a flowerbed or swimming pool, you can use the Off-limit Island to exclude the area from mowing.

Whether you have done Auto Mapping or Manual Mapping, you have to map the Off-limit Islands or non-mowing zones manually. Here’s how you can do that.

Step 1: Open the map and tap “Add More.” You will have a few options. Tap “Off-limit Island.”

Step 2: Reach the starting point for mapping and tap “Reached starting point.” Now, move the mower with the given buttons on the app and map the area.

Step 3: When you are near the starting point, tap Done and save the map. After doing this, the mower will mow the area except the Off-limit Island.

How to Create Channels for Multiple Zones?

Once you have mapped the boundaries of multiple zones on the app, you have to create Channels. These are the designated pathways that connect two zones.

For instance, if the mower wants to go from Zone 1 to Zone 2, it will use the created channel. And that’s how different zones are connected, and the mower can mow them without human assistance.

Step 1: On the map, tap Add More and then tap Channel.

Step 2: Move the mower from the starting point to the boundary of another zone. It will automatically create the channel. Just make sure there are no obstacles within 1 meter inside the channel.

Step 3: Tap Done and save the map.

Final Words

Mapping your lawn with the Navimow app is pretty easy. You can create boundaries for multiple zones in the lawn, select non-mowing areas, and create channels to connect different zones. We have shared the step-by-step process of mapping all these things through the app. By creating a complete map of your lawn, you can automate lawn mowing. The Navimow robot lawn mower will understand every part of your lawn and keep it perfectly mowed according to the selected cutting height and schedule.
